Do you know what metrics to monitor for your hybrid and electric vehicles? Though many of the data points for gas-powered vehicles are the same (i.e., driving style, route optimization, etc.), there are some important differences in vehicle status metrics that you need to be aware of.
- State of Charge (SoC)
SoC is the equivalent of a fuel gauge for the battery pack in an EV. The units are measured as percentage points, with 0% being empty and 100% meaning you’ve got a full tank of…electricity!
Technology like the Geotab GO device allows fleet managers to see exactly how much power each vehicle has left at any given time. This is valuable information because it allows the manager or dispatcher to find a nearby charging location if the battery is running low and communicate that information to the driver.
- Charging Locations
There might be a gas station on every corner, but we can’t say the same for EV charging stations—yet. The EV fleet telematics solution from BSM and Geotab is integrated with state and provincial charging location data, so your dashboard will show you where to send your driver if they need a charge.
- Charge Logs
Tracking EV charging data doesn’t have to be time-consuming and tedious. Geotab’s solution allows you to easily calculate vehicle charging costs. This is done by centralizing both networked and non-networked electric station data. In turn, your costs can be allocated accurately and any guesswork from reimbursing your drivers for at-home charging is removed.
- Battery Health
Just like the engines in conventional vehicles, the batteries in EVs are designed for a long life but will wear out eventually. The Geotab GO device collects information specific to each battery in your EV fleet, providing the data necessary to monitor its health, optimize the maintenance schedule, and plan an effective replacement schedule. Important metrics to monitor will be:
Battery SOH (State-Of Health): This measure the battery’s performance relative to a brand new one with the same specifications. Tracking SOH allows you determine if a battery is being worn out because of typical lifespan, or operational usage factors.
Charge Voltage and Temperature: We’ve grouped these two metrics together because they truly go hand-in-hand. In simple terms, the higher the voltage being supplied to the vehicle, the faster it will charge. However, an EV battery will charge effectively so long as it doesn’t overheat.
If a battery overheats during a charge due to too high voltage, it will severely impact the longevity, or health, of the battery. Similarly, if the motor temperature reached too high a level during a trip, this will also negatively impact the lifespan of the battery.
