Basic Diagnostics for Fleet-Wide GPS Installs

You’ve done this many times before, but just as you’re about to finish up this, you run into a problem. One of the GPS trackers you’ve just installed is not working right. Maybe it’s not receiving a GPS signal,  or maybe the tracker won’t turn on. Don’t worry. We’re here to help.

Advice from the Experts

At BSM Technologies, we’ve helped companies with fleets with hundreds of vehicles and assets install a GPS-based fleet management solution on schedule with minimal disruption. These companies range from Fortune 500 heavyweights to highly-specialized enterprises in industrial settings. Many government fleets across North America are also using our solution for efficiency and compliance.

Using this vast experience, we’ve optimized the fleet install process for minimal hold-ups.

One of the first things that we ask when a device is not working is for the installer to review the install checklist and see if all steps were completed in the right order. Usually, a quick run-down is enough to find the issue. Watch the video below to see how to do a basic diagnostics test on a GPS device.

How to Get the Strongest GPS Signal:

The first thing you want to check for is the location and placement of the tracker itself. Make sure the device is fastened properly and according to the manufacturer’s directions. This ensures that the device doesn’t become dislodged after many miles on the road. This is also a key safety measure, as you want to make sure the tracker doesn’t move around and interfere with the vehicle itself. Then make sure each connection to the device is secure.

Next move on to the ECM cables. Follow the cables to make sure they are connecting to the right ports in the vehicle.

Finally, we want to check the placement of the antennas. Different antennas have different requirements, so follow the instructions that came with the antenna to ensure the best GPS signal.
