What are the FMCSA’s new rules for electronic logbooks:

As the Federal Motor Carrier Association’s ELD (electronic logging device) mandate will soon be compulsory, it’s a good time to familiarize yourself with the changes ahead and how your fleet will be affected. Many fleets already use some sort of electronic logbook to track Hours of Service (HOS). It’s important to know whether your current solution will help you stay compliant.

Keep in mind, however, these are anticipated rule-changes that the industry is expecting to be published soon.

To get the full scope of the rule-making process see the FMCSA’s ELD announcement.

Checklist for an FMCSA approved electronic logbook:

The devices used to automate your electronic logs will need to:

  1.   Have a direct connection to the vehicle’s engine for trucks manufactured after 2000.  This is to ensure the driving segments are captured.
  2.  Manufacturer certification that the device is FMCSA compliant.
  3.  Send driver logs to law enforcement electronically.

If your current electronic logbook device is compliant with the 395.15 regulation, then you have an additional two years to make the switch.

However, the sooner your electronic logbook switch the better

While it may be tempting to put off changing your ELD closed to the compliance date, the sooner you make the switch, the better it is for your fleet.

·         ELD’s can be integrated with a central interface accessed by everyone (ranging from managers to safety experts) on the same page.

·         The updated devices can provide so many other kinds of data about the driver and vehicle to help with other compliance reports such as DVIRs and IFTAs – even behaviors such as speeding or idling.

·         To ease the costs and training associated with moving to an electronic logbook, the FMCSA has approved smartphones as an ELD – as long as they meet the above requirements. Make life easier for your drivers so they can continue to drive profits.
